Press Release - for immediate release

HAVE TOO MANY REUSABLE BAGS?

Addressing the accumulation of reusable bags in people's homes due to the unattended effects of the NJ Bag Ban, the MCMUA believes practicing waste reduction at the point of generation is always the better choice. So, reusing bags when necessary, refusing extra bags when asked, and disposing of bags when they have reached the end of their useful life are critical. Unfortunately, no recycling outlets exist currently for reuasble bags.

When looking for reuse options, donating to those in need is key for those in Morris County who have excess reusable bags. Whether it be from home delivery orders or collecting them over the course of time, one group in need of these bags in good condition and already cleaned and sanitized are food pantries. Donating them to those in need will allow them to continue providing healthy and nutritious foods without interruption of services. The following donation flyers the MCMUA created provide several outlets for individuals to donate them around Morris County with instructions on how to clean their bags.

How Do I Clean My Reusable Shopping Bags?

There are several ways to clean and sanitize your reusable bags.

Woven or nonwoven polypropylene bags:

Machine wash on a gentle cycle with soap (not detergent!) and cold water. Or, you can hand wash in your kitchen or bathroom sink with soap and water. Skip the dryer — instead, hang or line dry.

Nylon or polyester:

Hand wash in warm water with soap, not detergent. Turn the bag inside out and line dry.

Bamboo or hemp bags:

Launder on a gentle cycle with mild detergent or soap or hand wash. Machine or hang dry.

Cotton bags:

Launder with hot water, and your normal go-to detergent or hand wash. Machine or hang dry.

Insulated bags:

Hand wash with soap and warm water. Do not forget the inner and outer seams. Wipe with disinfecting wipes. Hang dry. Disinfecting wipes or sprays can also be used to clean bags. You can often determine the bag's material by some form of manufacturer tag.

  • New Jersey's bag ban has been an enormous success, reducing billions of single-use bags yearly from New Jersey's waste stream.
  • Donate any new, cleaned, and gently used reusable bags to area nonprofits or participating donation locations!
  • Let's sustain the momentum!
