Curbside Garbage Collection

  • Program Description: The town provides for residential garbage collection. The municipality does not pay for the tipping fees.
  • Schedule: Collection is provided once a week on either Thursday or Friday. Contact the town or the recycling newsletter for schedule.

  • Program Description: Rockaway Borough contracts for single-stream, all-in-one residential curbside recycling. Maximum weight of curbside recycling container is 50 pounds; use multiple containers if needed.

Aluminum Containers (Recycling - Single-Stream - All-In-One) Rinse thoroughly (no residue allowed) and commingle with recyclables.
Brown Paper Bags (Recycling - Single-Stream - All-In-One) Commingle with other recyclables.
Chipboard/Paperboard (Recycling - Single-Stream - All-In-One) Commingle with other recyclables. Flatten all boxes. Include beverage carriers, cereal, pasta and facial tissue boxes, paper towel rolls.
Corrugated Cardboard (Recycling - Single-Stream - All-In-One) Flatten and mix with other recyclables, and do not bundle or tie.
Glass Containers (Recycling - Single-Stream - All-In-One) Remove lids, rinse the glass and commingle with recyclables. Put metal lids into container; do not put metal lids back onto glass bottles and jars.
Newspaper (Recycling - Single-Stream - All-In-One) Mix with other recyclables, and do not tie or bundle.

Curbside Yard Waste Collection

  • Program Description: Curbside collection of vegetative waste.
  • Schedule: Every other week collection on a Wednesday from April through December 15. (see Recycling Newsletter for routes & dates.)

Material Accepted

Brush/Tree Parts (Recycling) Tie with string in bundles not to exceed 18 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length.
Christmas Trees (Recycling) Seasonal, place at curbside. Remove all decorations and no tree bags or stands.
Grass Clippings (Recycling) Place in large brown bio-degradable paper bags or garbage cans. Information available at Town Hall for "Cut it and Leave It." Save time and money.
Leaves (Recycling) Place in large brown bio-degradable paper bags or garbage cans. Do not sweep into the gutter or street.

 

Curbside Bulky Waste Collection

  • Program Description: Curbside collection.
  • Schedule: Picked up weekly starting March 1999. Check newsletter for your route & day. Scrap metal, white goods & light iron can only be put curbside on the last Wednesday each month. Please call Blue Diamond at 973-598-9800 to put your address on the metal pick up list. See below.

Metal Appliances (Recycling) See above and call for an appointment. Refrigerators, freezers & air conditioners must be certified freon free. For more information see the Borough's recycling and garbage newsletter.
Scrap Metal (Recycling) See above and call for an appointment. Example: metal coat hangers, keys, pots, small appliances, screws, bolts, nails, metal brackets, metal fencing, etc. Place curbside for pickup on the last Wednesday each month.
Type 13 Bulky Solid Waste (Disposal) Furniture and household items. Place curbside for weekly pickup. Limit of 3 bulky items per week.

Acceptable Material - Recycling

Batteries (Dry Cell) (Recycling) Place inside the recycling shed. Rechargeable batteries only as alkalines are safe to place in the regular garbage. Make sure battery are individually wrapped or the terminals are taped to prevent electrical shorting and fires.
Books (Hard Cover) (Recycling) Please place into the New Lagacy Book recycling bin. Please keep covers on the books and keep books dry. Please do not bring wet or moldy books and no encyclopedias. Also accepts soft-cover books in the same bin for recycling.
E-Waste - Computers, TVs, etc. (Recycling)

A drop-off receptacle for the disposal of home electronics is now available at the Recycling Center. Accepted electronics include the following: televisions, computers, monitors, laptops, computer peripherals such as keyboards and mice, fax machines, VCRs and radios. Absolutely no curbside collection.

Fluorescent Light Bulbs (Recycling) Package them to avoid breakage. Place inside the recycling shed. Use the boxes the new bulbs came in.
Freon (Chloro-FloroCarbon) (Recycling) Freon Appliances can be recycled at the recycling depot but first need to be registered at town hall and pay $15 for a receipt to bring with freon appliances to the depot for recycling.
Plastic - Large Rigid (Recycling) Place in the container designated for Large Rigid Plastics, do not mix with single-stream recyclables.
Scrap Metal (Recycling) Container avaialable for drop off of appliances and other metal items. Freon Appliances need to be registered at town hall and pay $15 for a receipt to bring with freon appliances to the depot for recycling.
Textiles (Recycling) Bring to recycling center in plastic bags to keep dry and managable. Includes textiles, used clothing linens and toys.
