ParentMCMUA Pays $290,000 to Municipalities for Recyclables

The Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority will distribute $289,662.58 among 19 Morris County municipalities for their recycling efforts in 2007. The funds represent payment for the 19,075 tons of recyclable materials the towns sent to the MCMUA’s Recycling Consolidation Center in Dover, combined with other materials marketed through recycling agreements with the MCMUA in 2007.

“This is, by far, the largest amount of recycling rebates provided to the municipalities in the last 12 years, and represents the strong recycling programs in Morris County,” said Jack Schrier, Freeholder liaison to the MCMUA.  The largest amount, $42,821.97, will go to Mount Olive for more than 2,750 tons of recyclable materials.

Denville will receive $38,063.21 for 2,473 tons of recyclable materials, while Hanover will get $32,571.48 for nearly 2,120 tons of recyclable materials. According to Kathleen Hourihan, district recycling coordinator, market conditions in 2007 greatly improved resulting in good prices for commodities.

“The MCMUA’s price received for commingled bottles and cans increased significantly and paper prices increased also,” Hourihan said. “Overall, this rebate for 2007 increased 73 percent over the total rebate for 2006 of $167,516. We hope to see a continuation of strong market conditions throughout 2008.”

Because the Recycling Consolidation Center accepts and bales large volumes of paper, Hourihan said that paper is more desirable to markets than the smaller volumes of loose paper collected by individual municipalities. “The rebate program is another benefit to municipalities for participating in the MCMUA’s recycling program,” said Hourihan.
